12 Days of Feel Good Eating – A Weekend Recap

So. I’m feeling pretty damn proud of myself right now. It’s Sunday night and I’ve just had my first completely alcohol free weekend in… Well, I don’t even know how long if I’m going to be honest with you. Could be years, really. For Jared it’s definitely been years. Now, we don’t sit there and binge drink every weekend or chug down bottles of wine during the week or anything like that. I’m not 18 anymore, I don’t think my body could even cope with that these days! But we definitely do enjoy a glass of wine with dinner every other night, and usually go through 1-2 bottles on the weekend. If we go out on the town (which is maybe only 1 or 2 times a month), then add to that a few ciders, some gin and tonics and well… You get the picture. As part of our 12 Days of Feel Good Eating, cutting out alcohol was probably our biggest thing. And I’m surprised to say, I didn’t even  miss it this weekend! There was a moment when I was coming home from a long 12 hour shift at work on Saturday and I remember thinking, “god, I could do with a glass of wine!” But it passed pretty quickly.

Luckily I had also thought ahead and bought us a litre of Nudie Beetroot, Carrot, Ginger, Mint & Pineapple Juice to have instead. It has nothing but juice in it (not from concentrate either, just proper juice!) and it tasted amazing. I poured it into wine glasses and we enjoyed a couple of glasses with our dinner. It was such a refreshing change.4 5 6 7Food wise we’ve been going strong too. Still sticking to our little list of things to eat/not eat and haven’t craved anything. My snacks at work on Friday and Saturday were just raw nuts, carrots and chilli hummus. I didn’t even bother cutting them all nice and pretty. I literally just dipped my giant carrot and ate it like as is, haha!2\Friday is usually our take away night and Jared always chooses Indian. So think heavy curries, cheese filled naan and plenty of papadums. Which is fine since we only have it once a week. I never feel guilty for it. But this week we decided to change it up since naan and papadums are both heavy in gluten. So we opted for a different cuisine. We just picked up some roast duck at our favourite chinese bbq store, and I stir fried with some organic bok choy, kale and broccoli and served it up with brown rice. Delish!8Today I woke up feeling more refreshed than I have in a while on a Sunday. Probably due to the fact that beetroot juice does not give you hangovers, it actually supports liver health so bye bye sluggish Sunday starts and hello productive Sunday! I tidied up the apartment, had a relaxing breakfast In bed (2 organic soft boiled eggs with tamari and pepper, an organic pear and some extra sharp parmesan) then got cracking into my assignments which were due today. I got one out of the way, had lunch then went for a run.10 119Yes, a run. I was full of energy and dying for a break from the computer, so I set out on a little run. My “little” run of 3km actually ended up being a huge 5km! Yes, that’s huge for me! I used to be able to run up to 7km, but that was probably a year ago. I’ve slacked off and today was the second time I’ve run all year, so I’m incredibly happy with my results!14See, happy face! Yes, I’m sweaty, I’ve got no make up on and my hair’s a mess… But I’m extremely happy here!  15After my run, Jared got home from work and we smashed a snack platter of cucumber sticks, pear, natural corn chips and chilli hummus together. I also bought organic kombucha when I bought the beetroot juice the other day, so we had those with our snacks. They’re so nice. Have you had kombucha before? I love it, but I just never remember to get some! If you haven’t tried it, do it! It’s basically a fermented drink packed full of good bacteria that aids in digestion. It also has a fizz from the fermentation so it’s a great alternative for soft drinks or when you want something super refreshing.17 18So that’s been my weekend, really. I’m really proud of how well we’ve been doing with it and I’m also happy with how great I’ve been feeling and how much energy I’ve started to get! I hope tomorrow is the same, as it’s a full day of college. I’m sure you’ll hear all about it from me regardless of how it goes!

For now, I’m off to stretch my hard working legs, have a cup of green tea and climb into bed!
